Leading the way to a quieter tomorrow
The book introduced me to the often ignored yet very profound impact of sound on my life. I downloaded the decibel meter and found several places in my regular daily routine in Mumbai that I can easily avoid. I also downloaded this app for my parents and encouraged them to use it as they live at the intersection of two very busy streets with a lot of unnecessary honking.
The book has inspired me to buy ear plugs for myself and my parents. I have also started the habit of engaging taxi drivers that I use for my commute on this subject of noise pollution. I offer to pay them extra for not honking during the ride. It works!
The solutions offered in the book are compelling and practical. The author has outlined ways in which every section of society can participate tangibly.
Noise and conflict
Often violence and conflicts happen when we are unable to manage our negative emotions. I had never thought about the role of sound pollution to the matrix of daily stressors. The book deepened my understanding of various types of impact that sound pollution can make on body, mind and the overall quality of life. At the Cities4Peace initiative, we focus on promoting inner peace as a way to sustainable outer peace. Our workshops are based on yoga and meditation practices so I completely agree with the author’s recommendation for designing a lifestyle change to ensure that we are managing our stressors. After reading this book, I am convinced that reducing noise in our environments is vital for inner peace and peace as a nation and mankind.
